October 27, Fraunhofer received in Brussels, the European Technology and Research Organization (EARTO) awarded the 2010 Innovation Award. EARTO the European research and technology organizations, industry associations, which awarded the Innovation Award recognizes research and technology organizations to promote the economic and social progress of the research.
The award-winning research from Freiburg’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). The Institute’s Bette Andreas (Andreas Bett) and his team developed the efficiency of traditional silicon solar cells is almost twice the solar cells. This battery with a solar cell stack technology, the entire solar spectrum can be used for energy production.
Developed in the laboratory of the present silicon-based solar cells, the maximum conversion efficiency of monocrystalline silicon cells is 29%, while the ISE efficiency achieved 41.1%, which is the second in 2007 developed the U.S. Limited Spectrolab efficiency of 40.7% solar cell after a landmark record.
To achieve this goal, ISE researchers to improve the multi-stacked solar cell. The three sub-cells inside the battery by the Ⅲ – Ⅴ compound semiconductors (referring to the periodic table in group Ⅲ and Ⅴ group elements generated by the combination of compound semiconductors, including gallium arsenide, indium phosphide and gallium nitride, etc.) superposition with each other, each child into the battery can be particularly effective in a certain range of wavelengths of sunlight. These highly efficient battery is installed in can concentrate sunlight 500 times the strength in the concentrator. The ISE since 2006, continuous improvement, which focus sunlight inside the metal structure has a larger current can be transferred, and their lower resistance, the size is very small and will not block sunlight penetration.
To make this technology quickly from the laboratory to industrial, ISE Institute also dedicated the construction of a demonstration laboratory, to demonstrate how their application in industry. ISE isolated from Concentrix Solar Concentrator produced by the system, has been the application of solar power plants in Spain to help achieve a solar power generation system efficiency of 25%.
